Chris McDonald MP, appointed Minister of State (Minister for Science, Innovation and Investment) jointly in the Department for Health and Social Care (DHSC) on 23 July 2026 and the Department for Business, Innovation, Science and Trade on 21 July 2026.[1]

On August 20, 2026, The UK Government and the Intellectual Property Office (IPO) formally announced the appointment of Chris McDonald MP as the Minister with responsibility for Intellectual Property.

• Background & Industry Experience: First elected as Labour MP for Stockton North in 2024, McDonald brings substantial industrial and technical R&D pedigree. A chemical engineer by training (Cambridge, Warwick MBA) and Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, he spent two decades in industrial research, notably serving as CEO of the Materials Processing Institute after leading its divestment from Tata Steel UK.[3]
